There are several arrangements of financial interest
- In general, it is profitable to always register to conferences or
workshop explicitly as PhD student, because usually reduction of fees
applies. If needed, the local personel department can provide a proof of
PhD-studentship. Also, one can often apply for special grants for PhD
students. This should always be tried.
- NWO has funds for short foreign visits. These are open to all
researchers (so also PhD students) that are not payed from an
NWO project. See the NWO
page for details.
- There is an annual Frye Stipendium for female PhD students
in their third year. It gives a stipendium of 3000 Euro, to be spent on
visiting a foreign university or research institute. Application plans
should be discussed with the PhD supervisor, and are coordinated by
the faculty: contact Jan Jetze Zijlstra. Several computer science PhD students have already
benefitted from this stipendium.
- The university Pedel
pays about 2250 guilders for the 65 obligatory copies of the PhD thesis.
- The research school that the PhD student is working in may have special requests or may provide specific support. Consult your supervisor/promotor.
- IPA
asks their member PhD students to send a copy of their PhD thesis
to all IPA research leaders. IPA pays 11,50 Euro per thesis. Please check the IPA website for details.
- The website of SIKS mentions no special rules.
- ICIS (the computer science department) has set up a financial encouragement
to complete a PhD thesis within four years. This is known as the
RPP, for Rappe Promotie Premie. These are the rules:
- If the manuscript is approved by the
promotor and submitted to the reading
committee within four years, then the PhD student receives 1360 Euro.
The same rules apply to a student with a part-time position (but
whose main job is at this university). In special cases (e.g.
long-term illness) these rules may be adapted.
- Applications for the RPP should
be sent by the promotor to the research director of ICIS.
The RPP is in principle subject to tax. One can request for a
payment in natura, so that the deparment pays for example
part of the printing costs of the thesis.
