The cover-up model of the mind Henk Barendregt Abstract. The three fundamental characteristics of existence, as described in the classical Buddhist texts and as experienced in the practise of vipassana meditation, are three different aspects of the same phenomenon: the fundamental process present in our potential consciousness. Its characteristics are fluctuations, suffering and beyond control. Usually a cover-up takes places: feelings (pleasant, repulsive and neutral) hide the process from us. We want to avoid the process at all costs. This explains why we are attached to our feelings and the behaviour that causes it. Depression, nausea, or anxiety are forms of covering the process. There are also pleasant ways to cover-up. In all cases the cover-up process is a symptomatic treatment. A real cure is possible by replacing feeling by mindfulness. Hypotheses about the process, its cover-up and its cure will be stated. Some data coming from cellular biology are considered as initial evidence. Reference: |
