Two Bidding Problems

Today is already our last competition. That is a pity, but reaching the top spot at least makes it an ending to remember. Not much of interest happened that evening. Most points were gained in the bidding. Usually by lousy bidding by the opponents. However, the next hand was well judged by our side.

I hear my partner open 1D (at least four) and I pick up the following hand (assume I'm sitting south):

Sxxx HKQ DKQxxxx Cxx

How do you continue when your right hand opponent doubles for takeout?

Probably three or four diamonds can be made. Five diamonds is probably to much. It could be even 3NT, when partner has the right hand. Therefore I started with a redouble. I don't want to defend with this hand, but when I support diamonds later it should show this kind of hand.

West bid 1H, and north and east passed. I was not sure if my partner knew what I was doing, but I just bid 2D assuming that it was highly improbable that it would be passed out.

West continued with 2H, north 3D, and east 3H. Finally it was time to suggest a game in notrump as I bid 3NT. Everyone thought this was alright and passed (although not happily by the opponents). West led a heart and I quickly wrapped up 9 tricks, as my partner tabled:

SQ10x HAxx DAxxx CK9x

Definitely not cold on a black suit lead, but still a nice outcome as we gained 8 imps. I guess no one found the game. A nice lesson from this hand was that the opponents were too afraid to continue to 4H by my redouble and notrump bidding.

The next hand was also very profitable, but mostly because the opponents messed things up. I had:

SAQJ8 HKJ109842 Dx Cx

A nice collection indeed. However, my left hand opponent openend 1H! Partner passed and right hand opponent bid 1NT. What would a 2H bid mean in this position? I don't know, and I didn't want to put my partner under pressure, so I passed.

Left hand opponent also passed, and my partner kept the bidding open with a double. Right hand opponent tried 2C and I came in with 2H! (Hoping that partner loves her void enough to pass.) Left hand opponent now made a silly double, which let my partner off the hook and so 2H doubled became the final contract.

The contract was easily made with an overtrick as I just lost one spade, two hearts and one club. Partner had:

S10xxx H- DAJxx CQJxxx

An easy 14 imp pickup! ;-)
